Lanning named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week

Iowa State linebacker Joel Lanning has been named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Cyclones’ 38-31 upset win over No. 3 Oklahoma.

Lanning recorded eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery for the Iowa State defense. The former quarterback also returned to the other side of the ball to complete two passes for 25 yards and run for 35 yards on nine carries.

The award is the first of what will surely be a number of honors Lanning will receive this week. The Ankeny native was also awarded a helmet sticker by ESPN‘s Jesse Palmer on last night’s College Football Final show.

Allen Lazard‘s game-winning touchdown catch from Kyle Kempt was also Sportscenter‘s top play of the day. Iowa State will host Kansas next Saturday at 11 a.m. in Jack Trice Stadium.
