Running through changes to ISU depth chart before Iowa

Here is a quick rundown of the changes to Iowa State’s depth chart leading up the game with in-state rival Iowa on Saturday at 11 a.m. (ESPN2) at Jack Trice Stadium.

*** Unsurprisingly, redshirt freshman Zeb Noland has solidified himself as the backup quarterback over senior Kyle Kempt. Noland went 0-for-1 in his one series of work during the fourth quarter of the Cyclones’ win over Northern Iowa.

*** Sophomore Josh Knipfel is officially listed as the starter at right guard after drawing the start against the Panthers. Knipfel was listed as an “OR” with redshirt junior Oge Udeogu last week, but with Udeogu out with an arm injury until further notice, the Iowa Western transfer will be the Cyclones’ top man at the spot.

*** Redshirt freshman Carson Lensing has moved onto the depth chart as the backup at defensive end alongside JUCO transfer Matt Leo. Lensing’s name has been thrown around quite a bit by coaches since his arrival in Ames last year. Leo played exclusively on special teams in his first game as a Cyclone as he still tries to fully adjust to the Power 5 level defensively.

*** JUCO transfer Kamilo Tongamoa is listed on the depth chart at nose guard for the first time as Vernell Trent’s backup alongside Jamahl Johnson. Tongamoa played a handful of snaps late in the game against the Panthers while Johnson was absent from the participation charts.

*** Evrett Edwards and Lawrence White have switched spots at the backup safety positions. Edwards is now listed as the second-string strong safety, as well as starter at the Star position, while White is No. 2 at free safety.

*** Mike Warren is officially listed as the Cyclones’ top kick returner after 58 yards on two returns against the Panthers. True freshman Johnnie Lang is listed as the next man up at the position.
