NOTEBOOK: Tongamoa update; fall camp injury report

AMES — Kamilo Tongamoa is still not on Iowa State’s campus. Friday’s media availability did bring us an update though: Matt Campbell believes that he will on Wednesday of next week – at the latest.

“He will be here,” Campbell reiterated regarding his JUCO defensive tackle. “His only holdup is that he is trying to finish up core credit work that he has had to finish.”

Campbell was also quick to point out that Tongamoa’s tardiness is not due to lack of effort in the classroom.

“He has worked really hard but he will be here,” Campbell said. “Cyclone Nation is all a buzzed about Kamilo Tongamoa and he will be here. He is a good recruit but there are 10 other guys who are doing a really good job. I want him here because he will add depth. When he will play and how much he will play will be determined by what shape he is in and how he can help our team be successful. I do think he will do that.”

Will Kene play?

At the very least, Iowa State is a couple of weeks away from deciding whether sophomore running back Kene Nwangwu will play this year. Nwangwu tore his Achilles Tendon during winter workouts.

“By the end of September I would like to have a really good understanding of what we want to do with him,” Campbell said. “We want to get to the end of that month and figure out what is in the best interest for him and what is in the best interest for our football team.”

Campbell said that Nwangwu began running on land for the first time this week.

“He is getting better,” Campbell said. “He’s progressing at a really good rate. We are fortunate that we have guys at that spot where we don’t have to try to rush him back.”

As for an injury report on the rest of the team?

“Knock on wood, we have been really healthy,” Campbell said.
