Matt Campbell addresses DB/LB Mackenro Alexander’s arrest

AMES — Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell said Friday night it’s too soon to comment on what linebacker/defensive back Mackenro Alexander’s status is with the team.

Alexander, according to the Ames Tribune and multiple sources, was arrested earlier Friday. He faces several charges, including two counts of assault with injury.

“We knew it,” Campbell said of the situation. “It’s something that everybody’s been up front about. It wasn’t a surprise and really it’s a situation that I don’t even know if we know enough about it, to be honest with you. He’s been really up front and honest and we’ll let the school policies handle the situation and then we’ll make a really good decision on it.”

Alexander is listed as No. 2 at both the star position and outside linebacker on the Cyclones’ fall camp depth chart.

“He called me right when it happened and we addressed it,” Campbell said. “Kind of working with the school right now to figure out all the parameters on it and we’ll go from there.”

Alexander started his college career at Auburn before going the JUCO route and ending up in Ames. The fifth-year senior played sparingly (mostly on special teams) last season.

“He’s got a meeting, I think, sometime this week and I think that, the reality of it, you know, there’s two sides to every story,” Campbell said. “And I think once that story really unfolds itself we’ll really see what happens from there.”
