Mike Johnson is no longer part of the Iowa State football team

Safety Mike Johnson will not play another game in an Iowa State uniform.

Head coach Matt Campbell confirmed during the Cyclone Tailgate Tour stop in Clear Lake on Wednesday that Johnson is no longer with the program. He was suspended indefinitely after being arrested for domestic assault strangulation in February, stemming from a fight with his girlfriend.

Johnson later pleaded guilty to a simple misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to 30-days in jail and one year probation in Story County Court on Wednesday.

“I think Mike and I both came to the conclusion that the best situation for Mike is to move on,” Campbell said. “I think for him to get a fresh start, obviously, it’s a team rule violation from my end of it. It’s one of the things we talk about it.”

Johnson recorded 44 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and three pass breakups in 12 games for the Cyclones 2016. He started eight games for the team.

“I think Mike made a mistake,” Campbell said. “Mike’s a really good kid but I think it’s in his best interest to continue to move on and we’re going to try to help Mike move on.”
