WBB: Cyclones fall at K-State 80-68

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 25 Kansas State (18-7, 8-5 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (13-11, 4-9 Big 12), 80-68, in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats got a boost from their bench, recording 40 points from their reserves in the victory.

Iowa State was led by Emily Durr, who poured in 20 points and tallied a career-high six 3-pointers. Seanna Johnson added 17 points and Bridget Carleton had eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Foul trouble plagued the Cyclones. Jadda Buckley fouled out, and Johnson and Carleton played much of the second half with four fouls.

How it Happened

Durr helped the Cyclones race out to an early 11-4 behind a trio of 3-point baskets. The Wildcats then battled back, taking a one-point lead (17-16) after the first quarter when Kayla Goth buried a baseline 3-pointer as time expired.

Iowa State shot over 50 percent in the second quarter, but the Wildcats went into the break with a 40-37 lead thanks to 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Durr scored on a drive to give the Cyclones a 37-34 lead with under two minutes before intermission, but Lanie Page hit back-to-back treys to close out the first-half scoring.

KSU used an 11-2 run in the third quarter to go into the final frame with a 64-56 lead.

The fourth quarter found the Cyclones struggling to make a dent into the Wildcat lead. KSU maintained its cushion, as ISU went close to four minutes without a point.

The Cyclones then erased a 10-point lead with back-to-back 3-pointers from Durr and Johnson to trim the deficit to four points (72-68) with three minutes remaining. However, KSU answered with a pair of baskets to go back up by eight points with 2:05 left.

Players of Note

Emily Durr has responded since being inserted into the starting lineup. Durr tallied 20 points and made a career-high six 3-pointers this afternoon. She also dished out four assists. It was Durr’s second career 20-point outing.

Bridget Carleton played all 40 minutes and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. She made both of her shots at the charity stripe to increase her streak of consecutive free-throws made to 42.

*Seanna Johnson started her 114th-straight game.

*ISU made over 80 percent of its shots at the free-throw line (88.9 pct.) for the 12th time this season.

*ISU has made a 3-pointer in 697-straight games.

*Emily Durr made a career-high six 3-pointers. She has drilled nine treys in her last two games.

*Durr’s 20 points was her second career 20-point game.

*Bridget Carleton was 2-of-2 from the free throw line to increase her consecutive free-throws made streak to 42.

*Carleton had 11 rebounds, the sixth double-digit rebounding effort of her career.
