PREVIEW: The biggest unofficial visit weekend of the year

Hilton Coliseum will host an important men’s/women’s basketball doubleheader on Saturday but Matt Campbell’s staff will be hard at work as well.

Consider this the biggest unofficial visit weekend of the year for Iowa State football.

Here is a preview of who is visiting, who Iowa State’s competition is along with highlight tapes.

John Waggoner, DE, Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines) — He is 6-foot-5, 230-pounds and is without question the top prospect in the state of Iowa for 2018. Waggoner has offers from everybody who is anybody in the Midwest including Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Iowa, Minnesota and Iowa State. He’s rated as a four-star prospect across the board and is 80th ranked player in the class according to 247.

Daniel Carson, DE, Independent, Mo. (William Chrisman) — Another stud defensive end with great size. Carson, who holds offers from Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ole Miss, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State and most recently Ohio State, is listed at 6-foot-5, 260-pounds.

Greg Newsome, S, Carol Stream, Ill. — Claims offers from Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Boston College, Syracuse, Northwestern, Illinois and others.

Tyrik Henderson, CB out of Carol Stream, Ill — Newsome’s teammate, with offers from Indiana, Iowa, Boston College, Missouri, Purdue, Syracuse and others.

Brian Johnson, OLB, Manvel, Texas —  At 6-2, 185-pounds, Johnson is a three-star prospect with offers from Iowa State, Oklahoma State and a handful of non P-5 schools. Iowa State likes him a lot.

Will McDonald, DE, Waukesha (North), Wisc. — No offers yet but Iowa State likes this 6-foot-5, 200-pound prospect a lot. Wisconsin is sniffing around too.

Chris Williams

Chris was hired as Cyclone Fanatic’s publisher in the fall of 2009. He is Iowa State football's postgame show host on the Cyclone Radio Network and can be heard daily from 4-7 on Des Moines' top-rated sports station, 1460 KXnO. Williams, a 2007 graduate of Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism, is the former publisher of the old CycloneNation.com (Scout.com). He has also written for the Des Moines Register, the Ames Tribune, CycloneReport.com and is the former sports director at KMA Radio. When Williams isn’t working, you can usually find him doing something outdoors with his wife Ashley, daughter Camryn, and Golden Retriever Dierks. He enjoys golfing, boating, country music, the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Braves and is passionate about any and all motor sports so finding Williams at a local dirt track is very common.
