CCL Recap: Mitrou-Long breaks league single-game scoring record

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — It had been nearly two years since the last time Naz Mitrou-Long played a game in the YMCA Capital City League.

Safe to say, he came back with a bang on Sunday.

Mitrou-Long scored 72 points on 28-of-50 from the floor, 11-of-26 from behind the arc, breaking Sherron Dorsey-Walker’s league record for points in a single game. The one asterisk is that his opponent, ADIO Chiropractic, was playing without both of their Iowa State players (Nick Babb and Solomon Young).

To say that Mitrou-Long’s scoring record was a surprise would be an understatement. I left Valley Southwoods with 10 minutes left in the first half in order to make it home for game seven.

When I left, I don’t think he had more than maybe five or six points, and had missed his first few shots from deep.

I know I won’t be leaving early anymore when Naz is on the floor.

I was planning on leading with Merrill Holden when I walked out of the gym — then, you know, 72 points.

He scored 33 points on 13-of-21 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in a 116-93 win over Renaissance Granite & Quartz. Monte Morris scored 23 points on 9-of-26 shooting in the loss.

The 6-foot-8-inch, graduate transfer was dominant at times. He even finished the game with a thunderous one-handed dunk on a drive then stole the ball and hit a 3-pointer.

It was definitely an impressive debut for a player that figures to play a huge role in Iowa State’s frontcourt this season.

*** Matt Thomas scored 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, 4-of-10 from 3-point range, in the win. Simeon Carter scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

He contributed one of the highlights of the night when he threw down a dunk through a foul over Stu Nezlek, who added nine points for Hannah Homes.

Deonte Burton scored 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting with 10 rebounds to lead the way for Hannah Homes.
