CHICAGO — Iowa State trailed Virginia by 17 points midway through the second half. That’s way too big of a hole to dig against a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

That’s a season, folks. Iowa State never led, and Virginia topped the Cyclones by an 84-71 final.

One thing happened in this game that absolutely couldn’t if the Cyclones were going to win. Georges Niang got into major foul trouble early. Iowa State’s All-American was called for two moving screens and picked up his fourth personal with 13:10 to play. Still, in the final game of his legendary career, Niang scored a game-high 30 points.

Besides foul trouble, defense was the biggest problem for the Cyclones, who allowed Virginia to shoot 60.7 percent from the floor in the first half. The Cavaliers were brilliant in their own right, dishing out 26 assists on 32 field goals.

Iowa State cut Virginia’s lead to seven midway through the second half but with Niang on the bench with fouls, the run was cut short.

Iowa State ended year one of the Steve Prohm era with a final record of 23-12.
