DENVER — Lesson learned.

Iowa State was all business leading up to Thursday’s NCAA Tournament first round game against a trendy Cinderella pick, the Iona Gaels. The “we won’t let UAB happen again” mentality paid off too as the Cyclones fought to a 94-81 win over the MAAC champions.

It was an offensive clinic for Steve Prohm’s team, who shot 50 percent from the field while connecting on 10 3-pointers.

Five Cyclones ended the game in double figures. Georges Niang led the way with 28. Monte Morris rebounded from a shoulder injury nicely and scored 20 for the Cyclones.

For the most part, Iowa State was solid defensively too.Ionaentered the game as one of the top 3-point shooting teams in America. The Cyclones held the Gaels to 6-of-23 from long distance.

Iona guard A.J. English was as good as advertised. He was averaging just over 22 points per game entering Thursday and kept his team in the game with an impressive 28 performance. Jameel McKay’s former Indian Hills Community College teammate Jordan Washington had 26.

Iowa State will now turn its attention to either Purdue (5) or Little Rock (12), who are up next in Denver. Saturday’s Round of 32 game does not have a scheduled time as of yet.

Check out CycloneFanatic.com later today for comprehensive coverage of Iowa State’s NCAA Tournament victory and of course, we will begin to look ahead to the next round as well.
