Texas State has pegged former Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads as a finalist to be their next coach, according to the San Marcos Daily Record. The job opened when Dennis Franchione retired after finishing 3-9 in 2015.
The paper also reports that Houston offensive coordinator, and former Texas quarterback, Major Applewhite has turned down an interview for the job. The Daily Record says the other finalists for the position are Houston co-defensive coordinator Craig Naivar, current Texas State offensive coordinator Mike Schultz and Texas special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Traylor.
Rhoads was fired after the Cyclones finished 3-9 during the 2015 season. He compiled a 32-55 record in seven seasons at Iowa State and took the Cyclones to three bowl games in his first four seasons.
