RECRUITING: Prohm hands out more offers in active month

The month of July has nearly come to an end and after a late start, Steve Prohm’s staff finally has its feet underneath it on the recruiting trail.

As we reported on Sunday, Iowa State is in the mix for a prospect that would serve as immediate help for next season, 6-foot-8 power forward Simeon Carter.

Iowa State’s focus has mainly been on 2016 and beyond as after next season, the Cyclones will likely have anywhere from five to seven scholarships to fill.

Here’s an update on some important tidbits from the last week on the trail.

HELLO SOUTHEAST

When Steve Prohm was hired, we all assumed that he would stay close to home on the recruiting trail and scour the southeast corner of the United States. The former Murray State head coach appears to be doing just that.

According to multiple sources, Prohm recently offered a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Suwanee, Georgia named Romello White. White reportedly has additional offers from Alabama, Auburn, Kansas State, Marquette, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas A&M and others.

Elsewhere in the Sun Belt region of the United States, Starkville, Miss. guard Tyson Carter has added Iowa State to his offer list as well, according to a source. The 6-foot-3 point guard only claims an offer from Mississippi State according to his Scout.com profile.

MORE OFFERS/ITEMS TO NOTE

SOLOMON YOUNG: This power forward out of Sacramento, Calif. is a prospect to keep an eye on. Iowa State recently jumped in on Young, who Rivals.com reports has offers from Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, Nevada and pretty much every mid-major school on the west coast. According to a source, Iowa State is actively recruiting Young but I’m still unsure if an actual offer has been handed out to the 6-foot-7 four-man.

ERIC CURRY: This 6-foot-7, 195-pound power forward out of Little Rock, Ark. snagged an Iowa State offer earlier this month at the Peach Jam. According to his profile at Rivals.com, Curry has additional offers from Arkansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma State and a list of mid-majors.

JERIAH HORNE: Iowa State loves this forward out of Kansas State but the word on the street is that Kansas State remains a heavy favorite here.

POINT GUARDS: Iowa State has made point guard a priority going forward. Prohm and his staff are preparing for the worst (which would ultimately be a great thing), that’s Monte Morris heading to the NBA after his junior season.

As we have previously reported, Xavier Simpson out of Ohio has been offered and will officially visit Iowa State on Aug. 8.

There is still a chance that Iowa State could comb the junior college ranks for a 2016 point guard as well. In fact, I fully expect them to do just that.

Of course, Nick Noskowiak signed with the Cyclones in 2015 and the hopes are that he will develop into a quality Big 12 floor general as well.

Steve Prohm loves quality point guards though and he’s making the most important position on the floor a priority early on during his Iowa State tenure.

Chris Williams

Chris was hired as Cyclone Fanatic’s publisher in the fall of 2009. He is Iowa State football's postgame show host on the Cyclone Radio Network and can be heard daily from 4-7 on Des Moines' top-rated sports station, 1460 KXnO. Williams, a 2007 graduate of Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism, is the former publisher of the old CycloneNation.com (Scout.com). He has also written for the Des Moines Register, the Ames Tribune, CycloneReport.com and is the former sports director at KMA Radio. When Williams isn’t working, you can usually find him doing something outdoors with his wife Ashley, daughter Camryn, and Golden Retriever Dierks. He enjoys golfing, boating, country music, the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Braves and is passionate about any and all motor sports so finding Williams at a local dirt track is very common.
