VIDEO: Kamari Cotton-Moya hospitalized due to head injury

AMES — About an hour after the news of Jamie Pollard’s heart attack was released by Iowa State, head football coach Paul Rhoads delivered more bad news.

The Cyclones tackled for the first time in spring drills on Tuesday morning. Sophomore free safety Kamari Cotton-Moya suffered an apparent head injury, was taken away in an ambulance and is now at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

“He sustained an injury right at the end of practice," Rhoads said. "Too early to exactly diagnose what it is but serious enough that they put him on a back board, secured him and took him to the Mary Greeley hospital. We will have more information on that come Thursday to report back on his health.”

Rhoads did not exactly see the injury and was hesitant to give specifics at this time.

“Without having a chance to fully scan the film and have a complete awareness of when it happened, hopefully Kamari will be able to give some of that feedback as they treat him," Rhoads said. “I just commend our our athletic training staff and the local authorities for how fast they were responsive to it and the job that they did taking care of him. They calmed him, secured him and got him on his way.”

Rhoads noted that Cotton-Moya was alert and communicating with people as he was escorted from the practice on a backboard.

Cotton-Moya led the Cyclones with 77 tackles last season in route to being named the Big 12’s Defensive Freshman of the Year.
