AMES – Iowa State’s Matt Thomas and Georges Niang have earned spots on the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball Team, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Thomas, a sophomore from Onalaska, Wisconsin, was one of 19 student-athletes on the first team. Thomas, a pre-business major, is a first-time honoree. On the court, Thomas is averaging 5.2 points and 2.1 rebounds. He recently scored a career-high 17 points in Iowa State’s win at Texas.

Niang, a Methuen, Massachusetts, native is a second-team honoree. The marketing major was recognized for the first time in his career. Niang averages 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the Cyclones, who are 20-6 this season and 10-4 in Big 12 play.

Niang, Thomas and the Cyclones are back in action tonight against Baylor at Hilton Coliseum. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
