Williamson scores career-high in win over Fairfield

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (7-2, 0-0 Big 12) defeated the Fairfield Stags (2-8, 1-1 MAAC) 76-63 in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were led by senior Brynn Williamson, who netted a career-high 23 points, and freshman Bryanna Fernstrom who grabbed her first career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

How it happened…

In the first half, the Cyclones shot 42.9 percent from the field as Williamson netted 18 points in 19 minutes of play to lead the Cyclones to a 40-31 lead over the Stags. The Cyclones would grab their largest lead of the first half with a bucket by freshman Bryanna Fernstrom in the paint off an assist from freshman Nakiah Bell, 34-22.

Iowa State would maintain its lead in the second half, but the Stags were able to come back to within six points on several occasions. The Cyclones would lead by as many as 19 late as the Cyclones went on a 10-2 run to get ahead 75-56 en route to the final score of 76-63.  

The Cyclones would place three in double digits with Williamson (23), Fernstrom (20) and Fallon Ellis (11). 

Game Ball Goes To…

Brynn Williamson. The senior from Kansas City, Missouri was just three points away from her career high at the half, tallying 18 points and four rebounds to lead the Cyclones. Williamson would go 6-of-16 from the floor and net three 3-pointers for her 36th career game with three or more from deep. 

Williamson would close things out with a career-high 23 points, five rebounds and two assists.

*Fernstrom tallied her first career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Iowa State returns from the holiday break to host the annual Cyclone Challenge from Dec. 29-30. The Cyclones will take on Howard on Dec. 29 and face either UC Riverside or Brown on Dec. 30.
