Iowa State’s true freshman point guard, Clayton Custer of Overland Park, Kan., has one primary goal this summer while participating in the Des Moines YMCA Capital City League.

Fill it up.

“The main thing is that I need to be a more consistent 3-point shooter,” Custer told CycloneFanatic.com after a 33-point game on Wednesday. “That’s the main thing for me.”

Custer went 7-for-12 from 3-point range in his second game of the Capital City League season. That followed up a disappointing 0-for-3 debut from long range on Sunday.

“The way I look at the Cap City League is we do our workouts during the day and stuff so that allows us to actually work on our game,” Custer said. “I work on the stuff that I can’t work on during workouts. I try to get a lot of shots up which was good because I made a few more shots tonight than in my first game. It’s really fun to play in. I really enjoy it.”

Another goal of Custer’s this summer is one that he shares with most freshmen around the country. Listed at 6-foot, 170-ounds, Custer wants to add some bulk to his frame.

“I’m trying to get stronger and put weight on,” Custer said. “I’ve been in the weight room a lot. I think I am on my way there and should be where I need to be by the time the season starts.”

Custer said that his strength coaches at Iowa State seem to think he is fine the way he is.

“They don’t seem to be too worried about my weight,” Custer said. “I think they are fine with where I am but I still want to put a little more weight on.”

Custer said that he weighs “a little over” 170-pounds at this point in time.

“They said that wouldn’t be a problem but I’ll probably be at around 180 by the time the season starts,” Custer said.

And of course, there is the usual adjustment from being a high school student and living with mom and dad to being on your own in the big city of Ames.

“I just started my first college class a couple of days ago,” Custer said. “I’m trying to meet people. As far as basketball goes, the guys on the team are all really good guys. They’ve made me feel very welcome.”

The YMCA Capital City League will be back in action this evening at the Valley Southwoods Gymnasium in West Des Moines. Custer’s Capital Orthopedics team (with Abdel Nader) will tip off at 6:45 and go head to head with Renaissance Granite (Georges Niang & Kourtlin Jackson). Coca-Cola (Sherron Dorsey-Walker & Dustin Hogue) will face ADIO Chiropractic (Matt Thomas & Monte Morris) at 5:30.To finish the evening off, Phoenix Renewable Resources (Naz Long & Daniel Edozie) will take on the Walnut Creek YMCA (Jameel McKay & Hallice Cooke) at 8.
