COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Iowa State wrestling team (9-6 overall, 1-2 Big 12) was eliminated from the 2014 NWCA National Duals, as it fell to Central Michigan (10-9 overall, 4-4 MAC) Monday morning at St. John Arena.

The Cyclones and Chippewas split matches 5-5, but CMU prevailed behind a pin at 141 pounds and a major decision at 184. 

Heavyweight Quean Smith picked up his third win by fall on the season, sticking CMU’s Adam Robinson 39 seconds into the first period with a lateral drop. Smith improved to 8-12 overall with the win and 5-6 in duals. The Detroit, Mich., native now has three first period falls on the season.

Top-ranked Kyven Gadson extended is dual with streak to 29 matches with a 10-3 win over CMU’s Jackson Lewis. The Waterloo, Iowa native scored three takedowns in the match and one three-point nearfall. 

The win pushed Gadson to 22-2 overall on the season and 14-0 in duals.

Earl Hall finished the weekend 3-0 after knocking off another ranked opponent today, as he downed No. 16 Corey Keener, 7-5. Hall scored three takedowns in the match en route to victory as he pushed his season record to 17-10. 

Michael Moreno moved to 24-6 overall on the season with a 6-0 shutout of CMU’s Zach Cline. The Urbandale, Iowa, native notched two takedowns en route to his 11th dual win of the season.

No. 8 Tanner Weatherman fell short in a top-matchup with No. 9 Mike Ottinger, losing 4-3 as Ottinger was awarded a bonus point for riding time as time expired in the final period. The loss drops Weatherman to 21-12 on the season. 

Luke Goettl finished the tournament 2-1, picking up a 12-5 victory today over CMU’s Scott Mattingly. Goettl notched two wins on the weekend over opponents ranked in the top-25 of the latest coaches panel rankings.

Iowa State returns to action next Sunday, as it welcomes No. 1 Minnesota (10-1 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) to Hilton Coliseum on Senior Day. Wrestling begins at 2 p.m. CT.
