Former USC PG Jones commits to Iowa State

AMES — Iowa State will have an experienced point guard on its roster when Korie Lucious graduates after all.

According to a source, former USC Trojan point guard Maurice Jones is transferring to Iowa State. Jones averaged 13 points and 3.5 assists per game as a junior last season in LA. He’ll be eligible to play for Iowa State at the second semester of the 2013-14 season. Jones will have a year and a half of eligibility at Iowa State.

Jones fills a major hole in Iowa State’s 2013-14 roster. With Lucious being out of the picture after this season, Hoiberg was likely going to have to play a true freshman (Monte Morris) or sophomore combo guard Naz Long at the quarterback spot next season. The status of Bubu Palo is still unknown due to his ongoing legal situation.

While both Morris and Long will certainly be in the mix for significant playing time next season, Jones brings high-major division one experience to Iowa State’s roster.

Jones, who led USC in scoring last year, was ruled academically ineligible in September. CLICK HERE to read more about that story from ESPN.com.

Like Iowa State’s transfers of the past, Jones will be in Ames for well over a year before hitting he hardwood and will get acclimated to the program in that time.

Iowa State now has one open scholarship for it’s 2013 recruiting class.

Tyler Community College (Texas) big man Daniel Edozie will be in Ames on an official visit this weekend.
