A former Cyclone wrestler is an Olympic champion.

Jake Varner defeated Ukraine’s Valerii Andiitsev at 211 pounds on Sunday afternoon 1-0, 1-0 to win gold for the United States of America.

Varner’s coach at the Olympics is former undefeated four-time NCAA champion Cael Sanderson. Varner was a four-time NCAA Division I All-America and four-time NCAA finalist at Iowa State.
