Tigers Push Past Cyclones 24-11

The following is a press release sent out by Iowa State athletic communications.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State 165-pounder Andrew Sorenson scored bonus points enroute to a 20-2 victory in the Cyclones’ 24-11 loss to No. 16 Missouri Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. No. 20 Iowa State falls to 1-9 in dual competition with an 0-4 conference record. The Tigers improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 competition.

The fifth-ranked Sorenson scored bonus points in his third consecutive dual match. The Woden, Iowa native posted a technical fall against Missouri’s Jordan Gagliano at 5:34. Sorenson scored four takedowns and a total of nine near-fall points en route to a 20-2 technical fall victory.

“I was out there to score and control the tempo,” Sorenson said. “You can see our young guys trying to do the same, they are being scored on because they are trying to be the aggressor. We lost a couple of overtime matches that if they went our way we could have won the meet.”

Redshirt freshman Luke Goettl earned his third consecutive dual victory in a 9-2 decision over Nicholas Hucke of Missouri. Three takedowns and a reversal fueled Goettl’s victory in which he racked up 1:22 of riding time.

Cyclone heavyweight Matt Gibson ended the meet on a high note for Iowa State with a 5-0 decision over Devin Mellon. After two scoreless periods, Gibson earned an escape five seconds into the final period. The Vallejo, Calif., native then responded with a takedown less than 20 seconds later and secured the win after a stall call on Mellon and over three-and-a-half minutes of riding time.

Iowa State plays host to No. 21 Virginia Tech Friday in Hilton Coliseum. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. (CST).
