No. 10 Texas A&M Defeats Iowa State, 59-33

AMES, Iowa – Adaora Elonu scored 14 points to lead defending national champion Texas A&M over Iowa State 59-33 SaturdayNo. 10 Texas A&M Defeats Iowa State, 59-33 in Hilton Coliseum. The No. 10 Aggies got 12 points from Skylar Collins to improve to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Cyclones fall to 9-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12 Conference.

Iowa State got 10 points from Chelsea Poppens, but the Cyclones got no closer than 16 points in the second half. Iowa State was cold from the field, hitting just 28.9 percent (13-45) of its shots from the field. The Cyclones posted an 8-0 run in the half as Brynn Williamson hit a pair threes and Nikki Moody drove for a basket to pull Iowa State within 19 at 48-29 with 7:54 remaining in the game.

Texas A&M opened an early lead, scoring 10 straight points, the last on a three by Collins for a 14-4 lead with 11:53 left in the first half. Iowa State worked hard to get good looks at the basketball but hit on 3-of-its first 11 first shots of the game.

Iowa State fought back with a pair of threes and Poppens’ bucket underneath to closed the gap to 18-14 with 9:07 left in the first half. Texas A&M answered on defense. Iowa State did not make another shot from the field for the balance of the half. Texas A&M’s Tyra White fired a successful three attempt at the halftime buzzer as the Aggies led 33-15 at the break.

Iowa State will play at Texas Wednesday at 8 p.m. CST.
