Top-ranked Hawks beat Cyclone wrestlers

The following is a press release sent out by Iowa State athletic communications.

AMES, Iowa – The No. 23 Iowa State wrestling team fell 27-9 to No. 1 Iowa in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk rivalry match Sunday. The Cyclones won three of the last five matches, but the Hawkeyes prevailed after taking an early lead in the dual.

Redshirt junior Chris Spangler upset No. 6 Ethen Lofthouse at 174 pounds to improve to 3-1 in dual competition. After the first Cyclone victory of the day by Andrew Sorenson at 165, Spangler kept the Cycone crowd cheering with an 8-5 decision over Lofthouse. Tenth-ranked Spangler upset the Hawkeye grappler with two takedowns in the second period. The Naperville, Ill., native had a quick escape to begin the third period and a takedown in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory.

An energized Sorenson handed Iowa’s Mike Evans his first loss of the season in a 4-3 decision. The redshirt senior ignited Cyclone fans in Hilton with an early takedown and a reversal in the second period in his last dual against the Hawkeyes. Sorenson, ranked fifth nationally, improves to 10-0.

Redshirt sophomore Boaz Beard won a tight match against Iowa’s Vinnie Wagner. Beard posted a takedown and a two-point near fall midway through the first period to enter the second with a 5-3 lead. With a quick escape and takedown in the second period, Beard extended his lead 8-4. Wagner battled back in the third period against Beard, but the Wichita, Kan., native’s 1:00:02 riding time secured the 10-9 decision for the Cyclone 184-pounder.

Iowa State visits Minneapolis, Minn., Friday to face No. 3 Minnesota. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
