Recruiting Notebook: Johnson, Green will wait to decide

Iowa State didn’t pick up a verbal commitment from its four official visitors this weekend, but progress was made. Here are a few tasty football recruiting tidbits for you on a Monday, with plenty of basketball content coming later today.

Kaleb Johnson will wait till NDS

While Jacksonville (Fla.) Ed White’s Kaleb Johnson did enjoy his weekend in Ames, don’t expect the 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive guard to make any sort of a college decision until National Signing Day.

“That’s what I want to do,” Johnson told CycloneFanatic.com on Sunday night.

Johnson said that his final four will likely come down to the Cyclones, Louisville, North Carolina and Rutgers.

One thing especially stood out to Johnson on his visit to Ames. That was the campus life at Iowa State.

“I really liked the dorm rooms,” Johnson said. “They had apartment style dorm rooms. I haven’t seen that yet.”

Iowa State’s tight end coach Courtney Messingham is acting as Johnson’s lead recruiter.

Green impressed, set with more officials

When asked if there was still a chance that he’d eventually become a Cyclone, College of Sequoias in Visalia (Calif.) defensive tackle Louvan Green replied, “there’s a big chance.”

But as Lee Corso would say, “not so fast my friend.”

Green, who recorded 42 tackles and two sacks as a sophomore, still has two (maybe three) official visits to take before he makes a decision. He’ll be heading to Baylor, Nevada and possibly Oregon State over the next three weeks. Green has already taken an official visit to UNLV.

“I just want to go somewhere where I can go in and play right away,” Green said. “I only have two years to play. I need to go somewhere where I can play now. Somewhere where I am comfortable with and where I fit in. They did a really nice job of making me feel like that. Those players are really cool.”

While visiting, Green did have an opportunity to sit down and talk with Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads.

“He said that he really needed me and that when I get there, I’d be able to play and maybe be a dominant force and impact player,” Green said.

Iowa State’s offensive line coach Bill Bleil is serving is Green’s lead recruiter.
