Three future Cyclones crowned state champs in Iowa

By Chris Williams, CycloneFanatic.com Publisher The Iowa High School State Wrestling meet is arguably the biggest sporting event in our state each and every year. On Saturday night, inside of the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, three future Cyclones were crowned as state champions.

Starting in class 3A, Urbandale’s Michael Moreno took the gold at 171-pounds by defeating North Scott’s Walt Gillmor, 12-2. Moreno was the state’s 3A runner-up at 160-pounds as a junior and at 152-pounds as a sophomore. Michael is coached by his father and former Cyclone wrestler, Mike Moreno.

Waterloo East prospect Kyven Gadson picked up a 3A championship at 189-pounds. Gadson defeated Des Moines Roosevelt’s Matt Riley, 10-4. This was Gadson’s second-straight state championship. Gadson went undefeated as a junior at 171-pounds. Like Moreno, Gadson is also coached by his father and former Iowa State wrestler, Willie Gadson.

Centerville’s Mikey England was Iowa State’s third state champion on the night, in Class 2A at 171-pounds. England defeated Ballard’s Brock Weatherman (a two-time state champion) in overtime by a 3-1 final. This was England’s first state championship. He finished second at 171-pounds last year, third at 145-pounds as a sophomore and fourth, at 140-pounds as a freshman.

Two other future Cyclones competed in the tournament. In Class 2A, at 189-pounds, Dallas Center-Grimes prospect Trevor Voelker was the runner-up. Voelker finished fifth at the same weight class last year. As a sophomore, he placed sixth at 171-pounds.

In Class 3A, at 119-pounds, West Des Moines Valley’s Brandon Jones finished in fourth place. Jones won the state championship last year at 112-pounds.
